All children on wheels: sharing second-hand bikes for sustainable and inclusive neighbourhoods

How can every child have access to a good bike without buying new ones? Op Wielekes is creating a circular, shareable model for children’s bikes across neighbourhoods.

In short
This research project strengthens and scales the Op Wielekes model: a circular system that offers shared access to quality second-hand children’s bikes through a subscription model. Artevelde University of Applied Sciences explores how to transfer this model to cities and towns across Belgium, focusing on reuse, community engagement, and accessible sustainable mobility.

Need and relevance
Many children’s bikes sit idle while not all families have access to affordable, high-quality bikes. At the same time, we face environmental challenges and resource scarcity. Op Wielekes addresses social inequality, environmental concerns, and the need for sustainable mobility solutions for young children.

From approach to impact
The project develops a scalable, open-source model using a Demo Depot to test and inspire different local applications. Researchers map both the qualitative and quantitative material impact of reuse and shared use. The project contributes to circular economy knowledge, encourages healthier and more sustainable habits, and supports connected and inclusive neighbourhoods.
