SkillsApp, market exploration and validation of innovative web application to objectify skills evaluation

The SkillsApp, developed at Karel de Grote Hogeschool (KdG), is an effective digital assessment tool for Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs). These OSCEs are frequently used for formative assessment of medical and nursing skills. Unlike the prevalent paper-based OSCE assessments, the SkillsApp addresses the problem of observers performing both observation and analysis, which can affect the uniformity and objectivity of the OSCE assessment. The development of the SkillsApp was driven by the need for uniformity, objectivity and reduction of workload. While conducting a station, the observer only records observations, while the analysis is done uniformly per station using an evaluation matrix, resulting in a weighted final result. The research and development of the SkillsApp have generated interest in both higher education and other contexts. A qualitative market exploration has clarified needs and opportunities in educational institutions, training organisations and companies supporting educational solutions. We would like to elaborate the quantitative market exploration within this IOF POC-Develop. To strengthen the valorisation of the SkillsApp, it is crucial to conduct a thorough market analysis (WP1) to identify potential competitors and gain insight into untapped niches. Developing a business model in collaboration with licensees and end users is essential. Also, creating a showcase outside KdG University (WP3) and investigating reliability and validity (WP4) play a critical role. The importance of a well-thoughtout implementation methodology (WP2) emphasises the need for a structured approach for smooth integration and effective use of the SkillsApp.
