BYE-CERTAINTY: (Rehearsing) Choreographies for Shifting Bodies in Transitional Ecologies
This research project aims to explore choreography as a way to imagine new possibilities for how our bodies can change and adapt, especially in response to climate emergencies. It starts from the idea that environmental changes are inseparable from shifts within our own bodies. This idea shapes the need for an embodied shift of perception brought about by the uncertain transitional processes of changing climates. By combining ecological ideas, speculative thinking (i.e., imagining possible futures), and choreographic practice, the project looks at how we relate to our own bodies, to other people, and to non-human life and ecosystems.
A key part of the work is creating dance structures based on the idea of “endings”. End here is not viewed as a
destination, but as a transition and transformation into something ‘new’. The research explores three themes focusing on how our sense of bodily wholeness, identity, and anthropocentric thinking can be challenged and reshaped. Rehearsals are treated as experimental spaces to explore how bodies depend on and co-exist with the environment, and to imagine new ways of being that are more attuned to the natural world.
The project will be shared through performances, writings, workshops, and public events, culminating in a trilogy of
experimental performance works.
Results
The outcome will be published in a book format, Möbius Ends, an assembly of scores, contributions, and theoretical references. The ongoing results of the project will be shared through lectures, workshops, and articles. The research aim is to evolve the field and larger discourse on speculative and post-anthropocentric performance as a means of replacing dominant human narratives.
