In an era in which digital technologies are becoming increasingly prevalent in the artistic field, this PWO project investigates how hybrid theatre forms – at the intersection of live performance and digital media – open up new narrative and dramaturgical possibilities. The project focuses on how technology (such as projection, AI and interactive sensors) functions not only as a support, but as a fully-fledged dramaturgical element within performances.

Through artistic research residencies, case studies and participatory working methods with creators, technicians and students, new forms of acting, scenography and dramaturgy are being developed. The central research questions focus on the interaction between technology and the imagination of creators, and on the accessibility of technological applications within educational and artistic contexts.

One component of this process is research into the function of a lab within the arts: a lab as an experimental space for digital scenography and performative setups. The lab supports practice-oriented research and serves as a meeting place for cross-pollination between education, the professional field and research.

The project also includes the work package The O. & The A., in which young people actively participate in the creative process. Through co-creation and reflection, they explore how technology influences their play practices and imagination. Their input provides valuable insights into generational thinking, educational formats and inclusive technology integration.

The project has a distinctly transdisciplinary approach, with active collaboration between the research lines Open Play, Open Stage, Open Change and Open Imagination. International partners such as Precursor Lab (SFU), ID Lab (AHK), Future Storytelling Lab (Artez) and LASALLE (Singapore) reinforce the scope of the project.

Through toolkits, documentation, workshops and valorisation processes, the project contributes to a future-oriented art practice in which technology and dramaturgy are sustainably intertwined.
