Drone Dock Test Facility for Establishing Research Protocols
Het D-TOP research program aims to develop robust testing and validation methods for Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) under various simulated weather conditions. This program addresses the growing need for a controlled testing environment where new developments in (flying) drones can be safely and thoroughly tested. The test infrastructure within Drone Dock is central to
establishing these protocols. The project follows three main research lines: the study of wind profiles characteristic of offshore environments (through the
implementation of the wind simulator), research into simulating wave motion (enabled by the stewart platform), and the characterization and evaluation of flight data (using auxiliary equipment such as the indoor positioning system). The testing methodologies will be optimized to enable realistic test scenarios
(such as offshore conditions) with a focus on certification. The valorization strategy and collaborations with various strategic partners will ensure that the testing facilities and research outcomes can be widely applied, both in industry and academia. In this way, the project contributes to the further development of Drone Dock as a leading UAS testing facility.
