Little NIRVANA - a new interactive pain management solution for children - towards a standard for pediatric pain managent
Effective pain and anxiety management during medical procedures in children is crucial due to the significant health risks and socioeconomic costs associated with inadequate support. Proper pain management requires a multimodal approach that combines pharmacological and psychological interventions. However, psychological tools are particularly scarce for young children.
KU Leuven has developed a proof-of-concept for an innovative, multisensory, interactive platform for pain and anxiety management in children: little NIRVANA (www.littleNirvana.eu). We aim to further optimize and validate this platform. The current prototype, primarily used for dental and needle-related procedures, will be expanded to ensure applicability in diverse clinical settings and across a broader pediatric population. Following this optimization, a large-scale clinical validation will be conducted.
In a randomized multicenter clinical trial involving more than 1,000 children aged 2 to 10 years, we will investigate three key aspects:
A) The effect of little NIRVANA on reducing anxiety and pain during medical procedures;
B) The development of a predictive model to identify factors influencing the platform’s effectiveness across different patient profiles;
C) The impact of little NIRVANA on clinical workflows, such as procedure duration and staffing requirements, to assess the cost-benefit ratio for healthcare providers.
The results of this study will not only provide insights into the effectiveness of little NIRVANA but also contribute to evidence-based guidelines for procedural comfort in children. Based on these findings, we will develop an educational package for future users, including theoretical insights, practical strategies, and hands-on training for correct platform use.
