This research project focuses on the heritage tourism positioning and visitor experience of former mining sites, using the ZLDR Mine in Heusden-Zolder as a case study. The project starts from the observation that redeveloped mining sites can play a significant role in tourism and cultural development; however, their unique identity, visitor engagement, and governance models require further substantiation.

The research follows a phased methodology: (1) desk research including analysis of policy and scenography documents and benchmarking of other mining and heritage sites (C-Mine, be-MINE, Thor Central); (2) fieldwork through semi-structured interviews with key stakeholders and a co-creative workshop; and (3) a strategic synthesis that translates findings into a shared vision and strategic direction. The project applies the following tools: thematic analysis, stakeholder mapping, and co-creative methods.

The ZLDR Mine case is deployed as a representative example within a broader challenge that is also internationally recognised. The results include a final report, a policy brief, and a visual presentation with recommendations on heritage positioning, visitor experience, and governance. In this way, the project contributes to knowledge development on the valorisation of post-industrial sites and provides guidance for policymakers, heritage organisations, and tourism actors in further developing heritage tourism.
