Robotics & Visions Lab Launch
With the support of VLAIO, PXL Construction & Industry is developing a modular and realistic Robotics & Vision Lab. The rapid evolution of robotics, cobots, vision systems, and AI/AR is confronting both education and the manufacturing industry with major challenges. Companies are seeking flexible, innovative, and user‑friendly automation solutions, but are often hindered by high investment costs, a lack of expertise, and the absence of suitable demonstration environments. PXL University of Applied Sciences also faces a shortage of infrastructure and didactic materials to provide students and lecturers with sufficient hands‑on experience.
Within this project, a clear bridge is built between real‑world challenges of manufacturing companies and technological solutions in the field of robots, cobots, and vision systems. The research is therefore closely linked to the Interreg Euregio Meuse‑Rhine project REAL DRD1CII111, strengthening knowledge exchange and cross‑border collaboration.
The project focuses on system integration and standardization, the development of mini proof‑of‑concepts, a sustainable didactic methodology, and collaboration with micro‑SMEs on feasible automation cases. In addition, research is conducted on AI and machine‑learning applications such as object recognition, quality control, and motion detection. The lab integrates robots, cobots, and vision systems in a safe, standardized, and flexibly configurable environment. It serves both as a testing and demonstration platform for industrial proof‑of‑concepts for micro‑SMEs and as a training environment through, among others, train‑the‑trainer modules, with a focus on AR/VR and lean workplace design. Students are actively involved in mechanical and electrical assembly, programming, and testing, enabling them to develop essential hard and soft skills.
The final result is a fully equipped Robotics & Vision Lab with seven setups, eight train‑the‑trainer modules, and three proof‑of‑concept case studies, supported by strong student participation. Through this, PXL positions itself as a strategic innovation partner for the manufacturing industry, stimulates the digital transformation of micro‑SMEs, and shares acquired knowledge through publications, events, and international collaborations.
