Scanning Connected to All Necessary Phases 4 the LIFEcycle of a Product
3D Scanning Technology: From Data Collection to Usable Insights.
3D scanning has long been deployed within various industries, but the biggest challenge remains the efficient processing and translation of the acquired data into usable and valuable information. This project focuses on the complete process of 3D
scanning, from the choice of the right scanning technology to the processing and application of the data within product development, quality control and production processes.
A key focus is on identifying the most suitable scanning systems for specific applications within the mechanical engineering and manufacturing industries. This includes not only the generation of accurate digital models, but also the processing, optimization and integration of the data into existing workflows. The project examines how scan-data can be used to develop prototypes,
reproduce worn or discontinued parts, and enable personalized production. It also looks at how scan-data can be used to monitor production tolerances and objectively evaluate production quality.
In addition to technical aspects, the sustainability and manageability of 3D data is also explored. This includes issues such as the balance between file size and usability, the long-term preservation of digital models, and the accessibility of 3D data to different audiences and software platforms. In specific applications, such as industrial manuals, heritage conservation and digital archiving, data security also plays a crucial role. The project evaluates strategies such as the
use of encrypted file formats, digital watermarks and segmented datasets to prevent unauthorized use and plagiarism.By considering the full life cycle of a product-from design and production to maintenance and repair-this project offers an integrated approach to making 3D scanning more efficient and accessible for both industrial and research-oriented applications. Results will be validated through real-world use cases and translated into best practices and guidelines that are widely applicable within the manufacturing industry and beyond.
