Crop diversification in forage production in livestock: focus on forage sorghum and mixed crop silage maize-climbing bean

In recent years, changing climatic conditions have led to both disappointing crop yields and a lower quality of fodder. This project aims to break the maize monoculture by diversifying the crop rotation with fodder sorghum and a silage maize-climbing bean mixed crop.
In recent years, disappointing fodder crop yields with a lower quality have been a reality on many farms. Changing climatic conditions with longer dry and warm periods during spring and summer have shown many farmers that they are taking big risks by basing their fodder production largely on maize and grass.
This LA-project aims to break the monoculture of maize on certain plots using specific crops: fodder sorghum and a silage maize-climbing bean mixed crop. This diversification in crop rotation aims at spreading the risk for the dairy farmer, and at improving soil quality, nitrogen utilisation and fodder supply and composition.
