High quality concrete aggregate
Concrete mainly consists of three basic main components: cement, water and aggregates. Today, the use of concrete is indispensable in our construction and infrastructure works. The aggregates (sand and gravel) are still extracted in large quantities from the soil. As a result, the supply of these primary building materials is becoming increasingly scarce.
Therefore, for several years now, the government has allowed 20% of the natural aggregates to be replaced by recycled concrete aggregates when building roads.
In an earlier PWO project (2012-2015), the influence of the use of this recycled high-quality concrete granulate on the quality of the concrete was investigated. The main conclusion was that the 20% replacement rate has no significant adverse impact on road concrete.
- Establish useful methods for cataloging concrete debris as high-grade concrete aggregates.
- To determine which crushing processes produce high-grade concrete aggregates.
- Establish the relationship between the origin of high-grade concrete aggregate and the workability, mechanical properties and durability of road concrete.
- Establish practical dosage, production and performance guidelines for sustainable road concrete mixtures with the addition of high-grade concrete aggregates.
At the end of the project, it is expected that:
- The rubble processing industry can easily distinguish which concrete aggregates can be used in road concrete;
- The commissioning authorities can adjust their policy on the use of concrete aggregates on the basis of the results obtained;
- The concrete plants can prepare their recipes for sustainable road concrete mixtures with high-quality concrete aggregates based on the guidelines;
- The road construction companies have instructions on how to sustainably place a road concrete with certain replacement rates.
