How can a physical education teacher become the driving force behind a sustainable health policy in primary schools?

In short

This practice-oriented research empowers physical education teachers to lead a sustainable health and wellbeing policy in primary schools. We explore how their expertise can drive school-wide change.

Need and relevance

Since 2018, a quality health policy has been mandatory in Flemish primary schools. However, current efforts often remain fragmented. Schools lack coherence and practical tools. Physical education teachers could play a key role, but they often feel uncertain about working with young children and their role within the school team.

From approach to impact

Using educational design research, we create tools that support schools in developing a sustainable health policy. We focus on:

  • strengthening the expertise and role of physical education teachers

  • increasing their understanding of young children

  • reducing stress and boosting job satisfaction
This approach aims to bring lasting change to school organisations and foster a culture of health promotion that is truly embedded in school life.
