The Data, AI and Creativity Lab explores how artificial intelligence and extended
reality technologies reshape artistic and design practices, social engagement, and
creative education. By bridging human and machine creativity, the Lab strengthens
LUCA’s position as a frontrunner in creative technology research, fostering applied
innovation, cultural impact, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

At its core, the Lab aims to bridge human creativity and computational
intelligence, exploring hybrid forms of authorship, new modes of making, and novel
forms of experience. It connects LUCA’s artistic, design, and technological
expertise to broader cultural, social, and industrial ecosystems.
The Lab operates along three interconnected research strands:
● AI/XR for Society – Using immersive and generative technologies to make
societal issues, data, and knowledge tangible, experiential, and discussable.
Examples include participatory installations, data storytelling, virtual civic
spaces that foster public engagement with themes such as sustainability,
inclusion, democracy, and (digital) heritage interpretation and safeguarding.
● AI/XR for Making – Investigating AI and XR as creative tools and co-creators
in art, design, and making practices. This includes virtual production,
generative design, 3D and spatial design workflows, AI-assisted sound and
music composition, immersive scenography, and hybrid performance
environments — fostering new modes of collaborative creation between
human and machine across the visual, performative, and sonic arts.
● AI/XR Playground – Exploring emerging technologies as catalysts for new
ways of knowing , examining the frontiers of immersion, perception,
consciousness and interaction. Topics include multimodal AI,
brain-computer interfaces, haptics, and ethical questions surrounding
agency, authorship and data, as well as speculative and critical explorations
of possible futures shaped by these emerging technologies.
Through these strands, the Lab will strengthen LUCA’s position as a leading
research hub in creative technology and design innovation within Flanders and
beyond
