Diversity and inclusion are high on the agenda of many organisations, but how do employees actually experience them?
Existing assessment tools often focus primarily on policies and structures, rather than on how employees truly feel. A sense of belonging—the feeling of being accepted and valued for who you are—is crucial to an inclusive climate. However, there is a lack of instruments that capture both this sense of belonging and its underlying determinants in an integrated way.

This research addresses that gap by examining whether current organisational policies align with employees’ lived experiences, and by identifying the mechanisms that strengthen or undermine inclusion. The project has two central objectives:

  1. To gain insight into the extent to which employees experience a sense of belonging, and to identify the organisational factors that influence this experience;

  2. To develop a theoretically grounded measurement instrument that captures experienced inclusion and its relevant influencing factors in an integrated manner. The instrument aims to enable organisations to monitor inclusion in an evidence-based way, interpret the results meaningfully, and translate them into targeted policy decisions.
