Intuitive Composing in Jazz: Integrating Embodiment and Technology in the Compositional Process
Over the last few years, the widespread implementation and accessibility of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) tools have created new possibilities for musical expression, influencing composition, performance, and audience interaction. While these technologies have been explored in various genres, including classical, electronic, and popular music, their application to jazz remains generally unexplored in an artistic research context. Jazz composition involves a set of different approaches, one of them being connected to improvisation in its intuitive and embodied nature. 1 Currently there is a lack of literature focusing on embodied experiences in jazz composition, where “musical ideas are externalized through the modulation of sounds through embodied rhythms, sensations, and emotions.”2 Furthermore, there is a gap in knowledge regarding embodiment in computational creativity and musical AI.3 Building upon ongoing research and direction of the CREATIE research group, this project seeks to investigate the role of ML tools as creative agents in jazz composition, focusing on the role of embodiment in the creative process. The project aims improve and develop new approaches, methodologies and skills regarding the human-machine co-creative process in jazz composition.
