Mediawise. How can we foster and embed media literacy in pupils aged 8 to 14?
How media literate are pupils aged 8 to 14? And how can teachers be better supported? This study explores how digital literacy is shaped in schools.
In short
This research examines how pupils aged 8 to 14 in primary and secondary education develop media literacy. We explore how teachers approach digital literacy, what materials they use, and what support they need. These insights inform a tailored support programme.
Need and relevance
In today’s society, children and young people are expected to navigate the digital world safely and critically. Teachers are key figures in this process, but often face unclear learning goals, fragmented resources and limited support. This research provides insight into their needs and identifies practical ways to embed media literacy in education.
From approach to impact
We analyse curricula and educational standards concerning media literacy and map the existing educational resources. Surveys and interviews with teachers reveal how they apply these in practice. Through practical tests, classroom observations and focus groups, we explore how teachers and pupils experience the materials. Based on the findings, we design and test a professional support programme. This contributes to more informed and future-oriented media literacy education.
