How do you make a 3D print look lifelike and relevant to the market? This project explores the colour, texture and applications of full colour 3D printing.

In short
How can we print 3D objects as realistically as possible—and who needs them? This research explores both the technical and market potential of full colour 3D printing. It focuses on designers, businesses and sectors that rely on visual realism for prototyping or presentations.

Need and relevance
Full colour 3D printing holds major potential for lifelike product visualisations, heritage reproductions and medical applications. Yet many sectors remain unaware of its benefits. There's a clear gap in market insight. This project aims to map where full colour 3D printing can truly make a difference.

From approach to impact
We investigate the complete 3D design workflow: scanning, modelling, and applying both colour and surface textures using bump and displacement maps. We also test post-processing methods such as lacquering and polishing. In parallel, we carry out desk-based market research. The outcome? New insights into how to create realistic 3D prints—and who they’re for.
