Scaling up the local chain of yellow pea based on fair value distribution
Through this operational group, farmers, researchers, and processors aim to collectively address challenges associated with scaling up yellow pea production. From a cultivation perspective, efforts are focused on reducing cultivation risks by implementing good practices including targeted bird repellent measures, disease and pest management, as well as an emphasis on the innovative concept of intercropping of peas and grains. Besides drying, cleaning, and optimal storage, post-harvest processing focuses on tackling logistical issues. In co-creation with processors, the set of receiving conditions will be refined/expanded based on the nutritional purpose. Finally, a collaborative model will be developed where each link in the chain can receive a fair compensation and where the risk of crop failure is manageable. The ultimate goal of this project is to successfully scale up the local yellow pea chain, based on fair pricing for farmers and a transparent chain framework.
