How can we prevent socially alienated youth from turning to political violence? ORPHEUS explores innovative offline and online solutions to radicalisation.

In short
ORPHEUS explores how to prevent political violence among socially alienated youth through alternative offline and online strategies. Together with partners from Belgium, the Netherlands, France and the United Kingdom, the project develops safe spaces, online tools and intervention models that help young people reconnect with society.

Need and relevance
Youth radicalisation is a growing concern across Europe. Many young people feel marginalised and unheard, pushing them towards extreme outlets. Traditional methods often fail to reach them. ORPHEUS offers an innovative and inclusive response, empowering youth instead of stigmatising them.

From approach to impact
The project focuses on three levels:

  • Safe spaces: trusted environments in youth work and education where young people can express grievances and rebuild social ties.

  • Online safety: media literacy tools, resilience workshops and online interventions, including 'fact' videos from young people with radicalisation experience.

  • Upscaling: systematising good practices, developing professional tools, and delivering policy advice at local, national and European levels.

ORPHEUS contributes to new knowledge and tools for radicalisation prevention, with practical relevance for both fieldwork and policymaking.
