Research is scarce on the possibilities of video reflection within a systemic framework
for parent-infant treatment in music therapy. When the relationship in development is
difficult or confusing, mutual signals are received less or differently. Parents' inner world
becomes fragmented by the worries and needs, which puts pressure on parental
mentalization (Slade, 2005).
This research explores how video recordings can be actively used within the music
therapy process to slow down the pace of the parent. In particular, it investigates how
looking back together with the parent to specific moments of musical encounter
influences listening and playing within the parent-child interaction. During the research
process, Moments of Meeting (Stern, 2004) are selected based on the affective
experience of the therapist. After selecting these moments, two working methods are
compared: (1) jointly viewing these moments in their original form, and (2) jointly viewing
an artistic translation of these moments. A refinement of the use of video reflection is
being explored to further the relationship in development.
