Drawing Out: Marks, Machines, Material Worlds explores how familiar technologies can be used to record the world beyond human sight. Many devices already sense their surroundings through heat, movement, depth or magnetic fields, but these processes usually remain hidden inside the technology. The project experiments with these sensing abilities by placing scanners, smartphones, robotic machines and printers into unusual, unruly environments.

Rather than using technology for its intended purpose, the research repositions devices so they respond to environmental conditions such as heat, light, moisture and landscape. The images and traces produced are not pre-designed, but emerge from interactions between the device, the environment and the conditions in which they operate.

Through alternative forms of recording, documentation, exhibitions, talks and workshops, the project combines expanded photographic methods with playful technological misuse. It offers new ways of understanding how humans, machines and environments co-produce images and knowledge.

Results

intended output:
-Participate in the department’s public activities. This would include contributing to the Soup Sessions, The Visit with master students and master classes, organising a possible talk or workshop.
-A guest artist talk organised with Duncan Woolridge in the Photography department at Manchester Metropolitan
University is planned for the 2026/27 academic year. Alongside this, ongoing conversations may develop toward a research exchange between Manchester and Antwerp, centred on experimental photographic practices and nonhuman forms of sensing.
- Through my engagement with new technical devices, I would produce a new series of outcomes, procedural experiments
that may be in the form of temporary installations, image series, or videos. These would form the basis for a public display
at Heldenreizer Contemporary in Munich.
