Futureproof Neighbourhoods
The project “Future-Oriented Neighborhoods” by PXL Construction & Industry focuses on the interface between construction projects and their surrounding neighborhoods in the rural Flemish context. Through practice-based research, the center aims to contribute to neighborhoods that are regenerative, inclusive, affordable, and sustainable. Local governments play a key role in this but often lack the expertise to fully address this complex challenge. The project strengthens collaboration between developers, municipalities, and other stakeholders, aiming for faster permitting processes and greater societal value.
Through five work packages, knowledge is built around planning processes, collective space, systemic interactions between neighborhoods and construction projects, and the translation of building principles—such as circularity and digitalization—to the neighborhood level. A research toolkit is developed as a foundation for follow-up studies. The project aims for strategic impact on housing, enhanced local policymaking, and valorization of acquired expertise. Students are actively involved through workplace learning and bachelor theses. This project marks the first step toward large-scale, externally funded follow-up initiatives.
