Expanding Conducting Practice through Posthuman Assemblage and Artificial Intelligence (researcher: Majella Clarke)
This research investigates aesthetic outcomes from embedding posthumanist performativity, assemblage theory and divergent performance within conducting practices, examining the emergence of the conductor as a compositional agent. It further explores how AI reshapes musical materialities, temporalities and performativity within composition and performance. How might conducting practice expand into a compositional role? And what might that look/sound/feel like? Through divergent performance and experimentation with technologies, ensembles and scoring materialities, this research aims to expand conducting practice contributing to discourses on musical, sonic, visual, gestual, material, temporal and algorithmic aesthetics.
Results
Intended outcome:
▪ Doctoral Thesis will critically reflect on the three cases studies articulating how conducting
can function as a compositional practice through the redistribution of musical agency with
human–machine interfaces. It will be written in English available in PDF and on Research Catalogue.
▪ Lecture Demonstration on Creating Dataset Albums and Training Corpus for Machine
Learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL) in Music Composition and Performance is derived
from the Case Studies.
▪ Final Performance: Spring Rites
▪ A Performative Multi-channel Audio Installation
▪ Media Portfolio
