Strengthening Adolescent HIV Care in Uganda through Implementation Science: Co-developing and Embedding the Life Transition-Responsive Adherence (LiTRA) Strategy

Adolescents living with HIV in Uganda are disproportionately affected by poor adherence to antiretroviral therapy, particularly during life transitions such as entering boarding school, parenthood, starting work, and transition to adult HIV care. Existing adherence support models are largely static and insufficiently responsive, undermining treatment outcomes and progress toward ending AIDS by 2030. The Life Transitions-Responsive Adherence (LiTRA) project, in partnership with MMU, MUK, and HOGENT, addresses this gap through participatory action research and Implementation Science by co-developing, testing, and embedding a transition-responsive adherence strategy in routine HIV care. The project aims to improve sustained adherence and viral suppression while strengthening MMU's capacity in Implementation Science through training and institutional integration aligned with SDGs 3, 4, 10, and 17.
