Values Explorer – Engaging in Critical Dialogue on Ethical and Societal Challenges
Primary school teachers increasingly report feeling uneasy when confronted with conflicting values that lead to tension and conflict in the classroom. Different perspectives on our shared society challenge teachers, particularly in diverse classrooms. Many feel ill-equipped to guide discussions on sensitive topics such as Black Pete or discriminatory remarks, and therefore tend to avoid them. As a result, pupils often miss crucial opportunities for social and moral growth.
The research project "Values Explorer" responds to this need by developing a methodology that fosters value-based critical thinking among pupils aged 10 to 12. Through a combination of artistic activities and philosophical dialogue techniques, the methodology supports teachers in facilitating meaningful classroom conversations about sensitive societal issues. The interplay between art and dialogue creates an open and accessible space for pupils to explore diverse values and perspectives, and to develop critical thinking skills in the process.
The methodology is co-developed, tested, and refined in close collaboration with teachers, based on their classroom experiences and feedback. Both the pedagogical framework and the research methodology are grounded in listening to and recognising children's perspectives in all their diversity.
The project results in a practical and usable methodology, including ready-to-use teaching materials and teacher guides. Outcomes are disseminated through workshops, conferences, and publications. In this way, Values Explorer offers valuable support to the education sector in fostering social and ethical development in children, contributing to their growth as critical and empathetic citizens.
