Designing Interactive Data Stories to Uncover and Navigate Uncertainty
This project investigates the relationship between data visualisation and the perception of uncertainty, focusing on how visual representations of uncertainty influence the public’s perception of certainty and reliability of the data, and their perception of trustworthiness of the news story and story authors. By integrating approaches from artistic and design disciplines, the research aims to develop innovative visual strategies that express uncertainty in data. Utilizing a research-through-design approach, the project involves designing data stories and subjecting them to evaluation within the iterative design process. The result of this project will include a comprehensive toolbox featuring templates, a guidebook, and visual design guidelines, providing journalists, data scientists, and information designers with practical tools to express uncertainty in their work while maintaining public trust.
