Artificial Intelligence as an Assistive Tool – Realizing Conceptual Structures in a Composition for String Quartet
This research proposal investigates the potential of artificial intelligence as an assistive
tool for realizing conceptual musical structures in a notated composition. This
investigation addresses a relatively unexplored territory by focusing specifically on AI
assistance for a notated music score rather than direct audio generation. The proposed
methodology employs a practice-based approach centred around composing a string
quartet titled "A.I.X.", which will serve as both a research subject and methodological
tool for exploring AI assistance, complemented by a diary study documenting the entire
process. The research will utilize exegetical analysis to interpret the diary study and
composition, establishing a dynamic relationship where academic analysis enriches the
artistic process. Technical collaboration with RWTH Aachen University will facilitate the
exploration of various AI approaches, evaluating their effectiveness in assisting
compositional objectives while maintaining artistic integrity. An artistic collaboration with
a student string quartet will culminate in a public performance of "A.I.X." Building on my
experience as a composer and violinist, this research project aims to potentially enrich
my artistic vocabulary and reveal new approaches previously inaccessible through
traditional compositional methods.
