Optimization of lab analyses and market research to support participatory breeding processes in tomato and yacon.
Vives is developing participatory breeding programs for both Phytophthora resistant outdoor tomatoes and yacon with high levels of FOS content. In this project, laboratory techniques are optimized to a) detect Phytophthora resistance genes in tomatoes using genetic marker techniques and b) determine the FOS content in yacon using enzymatic kits or HPLC to support the breeding programs.
In addition, market research will be initiated into distribution channels for innovative crops like yacon, and combined with the exploration of digital collaboration platforms for knowledge exchange among growers.
These three core components - participatory approach, advanced laboratory analyses, and thorough market research - enable local farmers to remain competitive through access to improved varieties and new market segments, ultimately strengthening their economic position.
